2008 Ironworks

2008 ironworks labelUnique. Handcrafted. Artisan. Red.”

Do you ever feel like someone is using a checklist when they write tasting notes? If you check off all the boxes, then you’ll have a winner—sort of like Bingo.

i r o n w o r k s is the first of our neighborhood blends, named for our Oakland neighborhood. Around the turn of the century, ours was the part of town where metalworkers crafted goods

to keep the Port and railways running. There’s still a large machine shop a block away from us that turns out massive custom wheels and bearings; it’s great to see a 10 foot block of steel turn into part of a container ship’s drive train. Given our approach to winemaking—we do all the work in house ourselves after much collaboration with the grapes’ growers—we feel that this is the perfect neighborhood for us to craft great wines.

This particular blend is 80% Nebbiolo and 20% Sangiovese, both from Lake County, and absolutely unique (so far as we’ve discovered). The Nebbiolo’s certified organically grown (Ooh! Another check!). It has a bright cherry note on the fore palate that is followed by subtle cranberry fruit and a hint of orange.

There’s just a hint of smokiness in i r o n w o r k s that makes it the perfect barbecue wine. It’s outstanding with pulled pork and sweet potato French fries and also works well with earthy mushroom dishes.

Going forward, we're offering the neighborhood blends in refillable containers: 1 liter flip top bottles for individuals and kegs for restaurants. This makes i r o n w o r k s both the end and the beginning of a story—much like our neighborhood, too.
